Beach Camping

Standard

Last weekend we met up with some family and went camping on the beach. This was Hannah’s first camp-out ever! Hurrah!

Other than freezing a little bit, it was super fun!  I forgot a beanie for Hannah, but a pair of her leggings worked fabulously.  We brought our nice, huge tent and could fit the three of us along with Jake’s sister Emily and her little family.  That meant two pack and plays for the babies and a dog or two in the mix.  I was nervous about how the night would go with the babies, dogs, snoring (no names mentioned), cold, etc., but it went much better than I thought! Half way through the night she ended up in the sleeping bag with me, so mommy didn’t get the best sleep, but who can really mind cuddling with such a cutie?!

I didn’t get a picture of our camping area just hanging by a dirt road overlooking the ocean, but here’s one to show the background scenery. Rather barren, I suppose, but it was still enjoyable. (Ignore my funny pose.) Jake’s cousin and his family planned our fun trip, fed us breakfast AND lunch! Their boys showed us their awesome riding skills on these three-wheelers.

Hmm… not so much Brooklyn? Curl up those cute little toes! 🙂

Hannah couldn’t get enough of exploring the rocks, sand and sea shells. Isn’t she just looking like such a big girl??

The water, on the other hand… brought her to tears. Yeah, it was a bit cold. Aren’t we are such great parents… we just had to dip her feet in! 🙂  Jake’s cousin and his children all braved the waters on their boogie-boards, though. I was impressed.

This was actually about 30 minutes from where we camped, in Galveston. Fun little place. We took a ferry (in our vehicles) ride to get there and enjoyed the much-more-sandy-beach.

Well here’s my only picture of Pepper (below) peaking around at me taking a picture. She LOVED the beach and chased those waves as hard as she could–those natural herding skills kicking in.

Until next time!

It’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright, bright sun shiny day

Standard

It only takes a few short seconds of reading the latest headlines to feel overwhelmingly sad about things happening. Sometimes it hits close to home. Sometimes you think about the “what if it did”. But in all times, my heart breaks for those who suffer and my prayers get a bit longer. Whether it be the loss of a loved one whose life has been cut tragically short, or many who now face life with amputated limbs. Homes are swept away in instant, destroying storms; people endure incredible persecution, abuse, and war… The list goes on.  One thing remains in common: life is hard.

My trials fall waaay below the weight limit when placed on the scale of life’s challenges, but they are my little trials and are plenty hard & heavy for me to bear.  Aside from weak moments when I’ve questioned “why me??”, I believe that our trials and hardships are tailored nice & snug to fit us perfectly. Does that sound sweet or what! Ha. But hey, we all gotta learn a little something different and in a different way.

My mom and I have this awesome relationship where we can vent our frustrations and problems to each other (us women need to talk things out don’t we?), but we always end  with “It’s all good.” Maybe it’s our way of apologizing for the complaining that we usually feel immediately guilty for (ha ha), but it’s also reassuring ourself that “You can handle this. You’re going to be fine. It will be all good.”

Well, things might not be “all good” for you right now. And my heart sincerely goes out to you! I cling to  my faith and the truth I know that one day, for all of us…. things will be all good. Good will win, truth will triumph. We can face the future with hope and know that pain, trial, suffering and sorrow will not exist for ever.  Even though “I can see all the obstacles in my way” as Johnny Nash wrote, “It’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright, bright sun shiny day.”

Light It Up BLUE for Autism!

Standard

Image

Happy April!

It is officially is Autism-Awareness month and today Hannah and wore blue to Light it Up. (Pink-polka dots are from dolly who had to be the in the picture. Hey, I tried.)  I thought about my dear friends and their awe-inspiring families…and wanted to give them all a big hug, tell them how awesome they are.  I thought about others I know and thousands I don’t know who are affected by Autism. They all carry-on through the thick-and-thin of it all, their hearts bursting with you-name-it-they’ve-probably-felt. Hurrah for you!

I can’t say that I know what it’s like (having a child with Autism) and would not dare to claim that, but I can say that I love children with Autism and want the world to know and love them, too.

So. Do you know someone with Autism? Take a minute and maybe learn about what makes them unique. And then, how you can help spread the awareness!

I’m a big advocate of the child-led approach DIR Floortime (because I believe the child is first and foremost first!) and wish everyone knew about it, whether you have a child with Autism or not.  It has helped me in my own parenting and in all other personal relationships. Really! It’s that awesome.
